Longleaf Stories

full circle in the hundred acre wood

8:30 a.m. Rice Cove near Asheville, North Carolina – 62 degrees

Doves make their coo, coo, coo sound in an alto flute register,  crows on the alert for the magnificent hawk, woodpecker bills vibrating off the old trees near the ridge top; even the old dog, Contract, has spied something worth expending her energy to investigate, putting a move on — I wouldn’t call it running — to go off the deck, down the slope, under the fence and into the pasture. After her near miss a few days ago, it’s a great joy to see her up, about and eager again.
