Longleaf Stories

full circle in the hundred acre wood

Is it just me, or have any of you noticed that as we plug more stuff into our ears and walk around with it, listen to music while talking on the phone while driving while whatever, the speed of our talk has increased, while the full articulation of our words has decreased, and, in general, friends, our commitment to communicate outside the noise in our own heads has gone to hell?

My hearing-impaired dear husband sighs, describing the difficulty of communicating with the world at large where so many people “speak in binary code”  — his phrase for rapid speak, the new norm.

The slow food movement has found a following. How about a slower speech movement, where fully formed thoughts are shared and chewed, as a fine meal, and not a mindless drive-by?

Speak. Leave a memory.
